Go On, Amend Away

Should flag burning be outlawed by Constitutional amendment?

By Laura S. Washington

Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel,” opined 17th century writer and critic Samuel Johnson. Scoundrels abound in the perennial campaign for a constitutional amendment to outlaw the desecration of the American flag. The latest salvo, which failed to pass the U.S. Senate last month by one vote, bore telltale fingerprints of the Republicans’ politically astute chief scoundrel, Karl… return to article

This is a non event whose time has come…
    (time being November elections).

Durbin and Hillary’s criminalization ploy is as stupid as an amendment.  These political games are designed to just let a politician go on record for what is known will not happen.

I fly my flag often and I am opposed to people showing disrespect due to what it symbolizes to me. Several members of my family over many generations fought for my rights AND theirs.

If it symbolizes something else to some it is their constitutional right to burn it.

I don’t have to like it — I do have to allow it.

However, I remain undecided about this issue from the Borowitz Report Friday , June 30, 2006.

At one time when Tony Bliar got into difficulties he resurrected the proposed law to ban foxhunting as a convenient distraction.

This united the cuddly animal brigade with those who just hated the foxhunting classes.

I don’t have a flag, apart from a merchant marine Red Ensign I had to fly on my boat. No intention of buying one, either.

According to my understanding the initial effort to get this amendment passed never made it out of the Republican dominated Congressional committee in which it originated.  This is a pathetic attempt at yet another redneck wedge issue to get the Toby Keith/NASCAR/WWF loving crowd all riled up!  In other words, the Republicans are falling back on the old reliable culture wars in the absence of political substance.  At a time when we’re about to lose the entire Middle East in one fell swoop after three bloody years in Iraq where there is an open civil war as Israel is wilding all over Lebanon and Condi no where to be found the only thing to do is ramp up the high feeling over a silly Red State/Blue State culture war issue.  Bush knows he’s cooked! He’s has no achievments to point to for this year’s election and mainstream Republicans are awkwardly trying to distance themselves from him as they run in various 2006 election campaigns. He’s got no more credibility anywhere except with his hard core rapture ready retard base!!! Bush is probably hoping to get the apocalypse he’s been praying for which makes him no different than the “suiciders” he crows on about who think Allah will greet them in heavan with a harem of 70 virgins!  Flag burning amendment? Let’s run it up the flag and see who salutes!
