When Warriors Dissent
By Salim Muwakkil
Soldiers of the first U.S. invasion force to enter Iraq have expressed widespread resentment for Bush administration officials. “If Donald Rumsfeld was here, I’d ask him for his resignation,” Spec. Clinton Dietz of the 3rd Infantry’s 2nd Brigade told ABC News in a July 15 report. Another sergeant said, “I’ve got my own ‘Most Wanted List,’ [and] the aces in… return to article

Posted by demosuzuki on Aug 11, 2003 at 3:42 PM I really enjoy reading articles
because they are very informative.
The trouble with the Bush Adminis-
tration is that they should all be
brought before a world court for
mass murder. For the so-called war
in Iraq was not a war but an un-
just invasion of another nation
for their oil and the destruction
of their way of life.
There never was a threat of Iraq
and their so-called ‘Weapons of
mass destruction” but only the
greed of this nation to control the
world.
Why should america or other european
nations be able to have them? When
nations of color can’t have them
for their defense? America is the
only nation which has ever used
weapons of mass destruction on
another nation of people (the atomic
bomb).
If there was justice in this world
the whole Bush administration should
be judged by a world court and I’m
including Codoleezza Rice and Colin
Powell. It’s a wonder these people
don’t feel guilty for their crime
against humanity for the innocent
lives lost in Iraq and the americans
who have died in that unjust (War).
Posted by Babatunde K. Abdullah on Aug 12, 2003 at 5:05 AM Who should be put in jail, Kathryn Fairbanks from Berkeley California? The soldiers or the sons of bitches who sent them there to die for their political gain?
Posted by neil on Aug 12, 2003 at 6:46 AM When idealoques and zealots gain power or political influence, the world becomes a more dangerous place. This administration highlights that point perfectly. These single-minded buffoons and coldwar throwbacks need to be voted out!
Posted by e sorensen on Aug 12, 2003 at 8:09 AM footnote: contemplating their course of action against iraq by Wolfowitz and others for years prior, one would have thought that at least they would have a strategy for the aftermath and some sort of exit plan. Ignorance compounded by stupidity isn’t a plan.
Posted by e sorensen on Aug 12, 2003 at 8:20 AM no suprizes. let us be no ways tired. persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. let us speak truth to power. let us hold power accountable. let us not fear evil.
Posted by gary m nelson on Aug 12, 2003 at 11:10 AM Good to hear about a few reactions from soldiers but not enough, I am afraid. Most of the world was against this deceitful war and expressed their opinion in hundreds of cities when there was still time to stop it. I don’t see why the opinion of a few soldiers who willingly took part in it would have more weight. Wars harm all humanity, contamination of the environment is a crime against all of us, as is greed and concentration of economical and political power but while a great number of men and women try to create a conscience over these items, the American people have chosen to close their eyes and ears and think they are entitled to the best and look upon the rest with total contempt. Their arrogance is only surpassed by their ignorance of the consequences of confering ilimited power on those who are killing not only innocent people but the hopes of future generations.

Posted by Maria L. Etchart on Aug 12, 2003 at 12:39 PM As usual the neocons dont give a shit about ordinary people and that includes the soldiers. The people that lay their lives on the line are abused and abandoned. Who is the traitor? The soldier carrying out his orders or his master forcing him to commit a crime by occupying another country.
Posted by A on Aug 14, 2003 at 2:04 PM This story makes me sad. I wonder whether the GI’s will have recourse in the fact that President Bush lied about the WMD?
Posted by Gareth Roberts on Aug 18, 2003 at 8:12 AM The soldiers identified by name in this and similar stories have, I fear, ENDANGERED themselves by allowing their names to be made public. Could we PLEASE have a follow-up to these stories checking on the welfare of these fellows? Could other readers who feel similarly contact ITT and other independent media sources to make similar requests? I read on-line (can’t remember where - maybe alternet or truthout) that some of the soldiers whose remarks critical of the administration and/or its war are being punished for speaking out. If so, we need a bright light shone in that direction to publicize their plight so we might attempt to provide whatever protection we can . Thanks!
Posted by Jo Ann Basgall on Aug 18, 2003 at 11:07 AM Thanks to all for this article. I happen to be an ex-marine and a viet-nam veteran. Something I am ashamed of, and have spent every waking moment trying to wash the stench of amer murder from my body. I too as the last e-mailer was concerned with is the fact that these guys names were used. I hope they are OK. One other disturbing factoid is when I see black men attacking iraqis then juxtipose the racist pig cops here. I know they are brainwashed as I once was. Thank the AFRIKAN GODS that the movement was in place, I was x-posed to literature that helped to open my eyes to the lies and deceit of amer policy. These guys today are in a void, despite the fact that the net is here etc. No one cares about the plight of others. Unlike “SHRUB” and the gangsters that now run the govern- you- men they never fought for anything or anyone than themselves. I have heard and seen through the years that what goes around will come around. You will reap what you sow. The murder of young black kids, the jails full, lack of proper education, affirmative (negative) action are signposts and large writing is appearing on the wall. In my war, the officers were killed by the troops. You can rest assure that more officers will be killed by their own. NOW THE FACIST RIGHT WINGERS WILL SAY I AM UNPATRIOCTIC. GET OVER IT BUDDY. YOU DID NOT FIGHT IN ANY WAR YOUR RICH UNCLES STARTED. SO SHUT THE F----UP!
Posted by Bomani Bakari on Aug 18, 2003 at 3:16 PM Bush and his crew of neo conservatives must be held accountable for what they have done to our young American soldiers and thir families. Sending them to a concocted war that was designed by people in our government, some holding dual citizenships with our “friend” in the middle east. When Bush and our esteemed congressmen sent 1 out of every 8 dollars from his war budget of $80 Billion to Israel and then shortly thereafter CUT our soliders benefits and critical veteran programshethey demonstrated their disdain for the very pople that are suffering ( or have suffered) and their politica kowtowing to the ultra right israeli lobbyist in this country. If the billions we had sent to Israel in this war budget was instead given to our fighting men and their families they ALL would be millionaires. Shame on these deceitful politicians. America call them to task and hold them accountable!
Posted by chester polwin on Aug 22, 2003 at 7:56 PM Unfortunately, one really can’t make too much of low morale in the current US military. The lifer-dog careerist types will volunteer to go to Iraq because they figure that without a combat badge their career will go no where. I would have liked to see a poll of the enlisted and officers before this war started. I’m sure the media reported much higher morale and support for Bush’s war policies, but it also might be the case that the military supported it all so long as they thought they were just going to kill without being killed.
Posted by Charles Jannuzi on Aug 23, 2003 at 9:57 AM so far every person who has been in Iraq has said that the news that has been reported in America has been much more pessimistic on the situation in Iraq than it should be, Morale isn’t as high as it should be, but its not this bad either. There aren’t many people who are goign around in the army calling for the head of dubya
Posted by john on Aug 28, 2003 at 8:24 PM Once again, Bush’s parrot gets on this forum disagreeing with everything anyone has to say. What a fucking moron--wake up and read the news, or at least stop listening to that jack-off Bill O’Reilly.
Posted by neil on Aug 29, 2003 at 12:30 AM Soldiers ought not to publicly criticize their leaders. Instead, they ought to vote them out of office.
If the dissent among the military is real, it should show up in the 2004 election results.
You can bet it will show up in future military ‘re-up’ stats.
Posted by Helen on Sep 2, 2003 at 1:22 PM The military are the pawns whose blood is being spilled for power and profit… a clear betrayal of their roles as defenders of this nation.
The US government is distributing the propaganda deck of cards (called the Weasel Deck - showing war dissenters like Barbra Streisand and Susan Sarandon) to the soldiers in Iraq.
I think everyone with a friend or relative in the military should send a set of anti war cards to every soldier to counter the lies. The deck is free with a donation to the alternative news site:
