Um "Media activists have to learn to work with like-minded members of the corporate media" Can I be the first say F*** that! The corporate media are the problem, we need to create a new system and not allow ourselves, our movement to be coopted and/or colonized by commercial interests. The corporate media see us as a niche market, and that's all we will ever be in their system. Check out the growing independent media system: http://coanews.org/affiliates -this is what we need to grow and support while keeping it clear of corporations. Again, Corporations are THE problem, not part of the …

"alternative media" is not a label - Independent media is what I am for - independent of corporations and government ideally. Pacifica may not be perfect, but at least they do not have as many structural filters as the corporate media. Clearly a more powerful independent system would help this country, it would help more Americans take note of diverse and dissenting views. That's fine if people want to pressure them, but don't consider them part of the solution - they are the problem with media. If you doubt it read "Rich Media, Poor Democracy" Support independent media!

this is so black and white - you can have a movement for equality while respecting and trying to empower minorities/identities. Look at health care in Canada - there is still racism but the fact is that all people have health care. This gives more resources to work with for those minorities, it helps them fight for there rights. Basically economic equality should be the main goal, but we should also work to support other movements as well. As a poor, black, gay man what he wants most, he might tell you health care.

I agree that we need to empower independent media more. To me it's not about left or right - it's about centralized corporate control over independent control. Check out COA News - Independent News Portal

This type of story is exactly why independent progresssive media is so crucial. I think they are generally doing a great job telling important stories, but we need to more fully embrace online video. This is a medium that is growing more important as we speak and we must take advantage of it. One service I did find that takes advantage of online vidoe is the COA News "Video Alert Service" where once a week, they send email subscribers online news videos for free. Through-out the week they scan their independent media affiliates and feature the best independent news and public …

Great article, I think we really need to forge and support a media system that is independent of power. Check this "Independent Media Marketplace" I recently came across: http://imediamarketplace.org I'm not sure how but we need to significantly expand the audience of current progressive independent media outlets and producers. Seems like there is so much out there, but so many just do not know about it, or realize the problem with the corporate media.
